Workshop: Microplastic emergency and the associated plastisphere in freshwater habitats of the Arctic Messina (Italy), 10-11 October 2024

The international workshop on Microplastic emergency and the associated plastisphere in freshwater habitats of the Arctic will last in two days. The workshop has been endorsed by the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and received financial support by the Italian Arctic Research Program (PRA)

The First Day will start in the afternoon and it will be dedicated to lectures by experts to showcase the current knowledge on microplastic pollution and the plastisphere in the under-investigated Arctic freshwaters. Each lecture will have a duration of 25 min plus 5 min for Q&A. A one-hour discussion among all participants on the topics addressed will be expected after this session.

The Second Day will include both morning and afternoon sessions. The first part of the morning session, as for Day 1, will be dedicated to lectures. After the lectures, participants will be subdivided in small groups for a first brainstorming on selected topics (to be defined) to individuate main research gaps and priorities related to microplastic pollution in the Arctic freshwaters. The afternoon session will be devoted to merge main information emerging from the morning breakout sessions to draft a document showcasing the outcomes of the two-day workshop to be shared with ICARP IV (International Conference on Arctic Research Planning) for implementation (https://iasc.info/our-work/icarp/939-icarp-iv-2025).
