Giorgiana De Franceschi

Giorgiana De Franceschi is Researcher Director at INGV, Environmental Department, Upper Atmosphere Physics and Radiopropagation Unit. She has been director of the Upper Atmosphere Physics Research Unit from January 2002 to June 2007. 

Principal investigator of research projects on Arctic and Antarctic upper atmosphere and GNSS in the frame of PNRA (Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide) since 1997, she is currently the officer of the SCAR (Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research) Expert Group GRAPE (GNSS Research and Application for Polar Environment www.grape.scar.org) and appointed as URSI (International Union of Radio Science) delegate to SCAR 2014-2022. Since 2021 she is Chair of the URSI G Commission, dealing with ionosphere, radio propagation and Space Weather. Since 2010 she represents INGV at the open-ended consultation group on the Arctic at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Tavolo Artico”. 

Her main research interests are the temporal/spatial modeling and mapping of the planetary ionosphere in different time-scales based on a multi‐instrument approach (GNSS receivers, ionosondes, riometers, HF radars, in situ satellite data). 

She is/was involved as Principal Investigator in several EC projects related to the ionosphere and its space weather impact. She authored about 80 papers on peer-reviewed international journals.
